Suggested excursions

Situated in the north-east of Saarland, St. Wendel is an ideal base for days out to a wide range of different towns. You can't leave without seeing the regional capital Saarbrücken, within easy reach of France, while a trip to Trier, the oldest town in Germany is an absolute must. Fans of the beautiful game meanwhile, should make a pilgrimage to Kaiserslautern, south-west Germany's footballing capital.

Saarbrücken
Saarbrücken's three prettiest squares are Schlossplatz, Ludwigsplatz and St. Johanner Markt surrounded by the narrow lanes of the old town. The palace, with its avant-garde centrepiece, is a blend of baroque and modern styles and a lively venue for cultural events. Every Sunday in summer open-air concerts are held in the palace garden. Ludwigskirche church is considered to be one of the most beautiful Protestant baroque churches in Germany.

Trier
The town's history begins around 16 BC when the Romans called it Augusta Treverorum. The happy coexistence of the old and the new - the illustrious past and a modern, youthful lifestyle - is precisely what gives Trier its special charm. You come across most of the places of interest, such as the centrepieces of all nine of its UNESCO world heritage sites, as you stroll around the town centre and sightseeing is easily combined with shopping or taking a break for a glass of Moselle wine in the medieval market square.

Kaiserslautern
As well as being the football capital of the southwest and the cultural centre of the Palatinate region, Kaiserslautern is a lively student city awash with traditional watering holes. You also don't need to venture far outside the town to enjoy nature at its best in the Palatinate Forest biosphere reserve, Germany's largest contiguous area of forest.
