Places of interest

With fascinating towns, countless tree-lined avenues and ancient castles all just a short trip away, Sachsenring racetrack makes an ideal base for excursions. Stroll around Zwickau's quaint town centre, learn all about aristocratic life at Stein Castle, and admire trees that are over 100 years old along the German Avenues Route.

Zwickau
Zwickau's lovingly restored town centre has many fine places of interest, dating back through various centuries. Highlights include the town hall, the priests' houses and the Cathedral of St. Mary. Music lovers meanwhile can find out all about the life and works of the composer Robert Schumann in the house where he was born. Motoring enthusiasts should head for the August Horch Museum, where they can learn all about how the car has conquered the world.

Stein Castle
Built around 1200, Stein Castle stands majestically atop a steep rock face on the banks of the Mulde River in Zwickau. It is one of the few castles that has managed to preserve its original appearance over the centuries, and is among the most attractive and intriguing fortresses in Saxony. For almost 50 years now it has housed a museum that portrays what living conditions and domestic life were like in a castle of the lower nobility in the Middle Ages.

German Avenues Route
All the way from Cape Arkona on the island of Rügen in the north of Germany to Reichenau island on Lake Constance in the south, centuries-old trees line both sides of the roads. Their arched branches form a leafy canopy above Germany's longest (2,500 km) and greenest scenic route, offering a visual feast of boundless diversity. Cycling or walking tours are an ideal way to discover these superb ancient trees, along with the picture-postcard views, tracts of unspoilt countryside and unique flora and fauna.
