Nature & greenery

These beautiful, densely wooded highlands bordering the Czech Republic are one of the most popular holiday regions in Saxony. The highest peak, at more than 1,200 metres, is Mount Fichtelberg near Oberwiesenthal, Germany's highest town. Formed around 300 million years ago, the Erzgebirge mountains are unusually rich in mineral resources such as silver, tin and cobalt, which all lie comparatively close to the surface. A walking tour is the best way to discover this charming countryside and its relaxing, tranquil atmosphere.
Saxon Switzerland's strangely eroded rock formations, which date from the Cretaceous period, are an unforgettable experience for visitors. With its chalky sandstone cliffs, deeply carved valleys, table mountains and gorges, this fascinating landscape is the only one of its kind in central Europe. Rock climbing in the national park is an excellent way to see Saxon Switzerland in all its glory, but there are also more leisurely ways to enjoy the breathtaking scenery, such as a trip to the Bastei rocks. Other options for exploring this amazing landscape include hiring a rowing boat or taking a boat excursion and admiring the scenery from the river.
