Places of interest

At 976 square kilometres, Rügen is Germany's largest island and is actually an archipelago of around 30 small islands and peninsulas. There is much to discover on Rügen - pleasant seaside resorts and small fishing villages, mile-long beaches, palaces, lighthouses and Jasmund National Park, the smallest in Germany.

Ralswiek Palace
Ralswiek Palace was constructed towards the end of the 19th century in the style of a Loire château. It is well worth seeing the interior of the manor house next to the palace. The grounds of the palace are also very beautiful with their wide variety of plants and flowers. From the top of the steps leading up to the palace grounds you can enjoy stunning views over the Jasmund lagoons.

Former royal seat of Putbus
Putbus is nicknamed "the white town" for good reason as the town's residents have taken care to preserve the neo-classical town centre with its white houses. One of the most fascinating buildings in Putbus is the theatre which was constructed in the early 19th century and since its renovation has once again become the venue for many different kinds of events. Other places of interest in the town include the orangery, municipal park, parish church and the royal family's mausoleum.

Ernst Moritz Arndt tower
The 27 metre high Ernst Moritz Arndt observation tower is situated on Rugard hill in Bergen, Rügen's main town. It was constructed in 1877 thanks to generous donations by the town's residents. The tower's three levels are accessible via a spiral staircase and provide stunning views across Rügen's magnificent landscape as far as the coast.
