Nature & greenery

Rügen boasts some truly beautiful natural treasures. The Königsstuhl (King's Seat) is the highest and one of the most famous chalk cliffs on the island, and is located within Jasmund National Park. The biosphere reserve in south-east Rügen and the Western-Pomeranian Boddenlandschaft National Park are amazing regions that nature lovers and hikers will remember long after they return home.

Jasmund National Park
Jasmund National Park is set in a chalk landscape with marshes, wetlands and dry grassland. The "Königsstuhl" (King's Seat) is the tallest cliff, but the entire coastline - 10 kilometres in length and up to 117 metres in height - is equally impressive. Made up of a combination of active and inactive cliffs, it illustrates the dynamics of coastal erosion. The cliffs are a distinctive feature of the region and are the largest areas of exposed bedrock in northern Germany. A range of walks, cycling tours, excursions and seminars offer visitors a variety of ways to explore the region's beautiful woodlands.

Western-Pomeranian Boddenlandschaft National Park
The West-Pomeranian Boddenlandschaft National Park is the largest nature reserve on the Baltic coast. A landscape of cliffs and dunes, spits and lagoons stretches from the Darss-Zingst peninsula up towards the west coast of the island of Rügen and is the ideal destination for both beach lovers and those who love woodlands. Visitors can explore the fascinating coastline and the woodland of the national park on a variety of guided and independent walks.

Hiking on Rügen
Rügen has a very well-developed network of marked trails. These footpaths pass through Jasmund National Park or from the seaside resort of Göhren across Baaber heath to the island of Vilm. Another trail leads enthusiastic walkers through the biosphere reserve of south-east Rügen which mainly consists of the Mönchgut peninsular, Granitz forest, the island of Vilm and the town of Putbus, and is made up of scenery unlike anywhere else in north Germany.
