Museums

Even when the weather on Rügen isn't at its best that's no excuse for boredom. There are plenty of museums devoted to a wide range of subjects. In Prora for example, there is one of the largest buildings from the era of the Third Reich. At the Local History Museum on Hiddensee island you can learn interesting things about the island and fans of old toys will be in their element at the Puppet Museum in Putbus.

Prora documentation centre
The "Strength through Joy seaside resort for twenty thousand people" is located in Prorer Wiek bay near the Baltic resort of Binz and is visited by thousands of people every year. The resort was constructed between 1936 and 1938 by the Nazi organisation "Strength through Joy" and aside from the Reichsparteitagsgelände (Nazi Party Rally Grounds) in Nuremberg it is the largest completed Third Reich architectural project. The Prora documentation centre is located at the heart of the complex and contains exhibits on the circumstances around and background to the resort's construction.

Hiddensee island
The Local History Museum on Hiddensee island, known locally as "Dat söte Länneken", is situated just a few minutes' walk from the harbour and is housed in the former lifeboat station. On display in the museum are an amber room and copies of the gold jewellery found on the island in 1872 which dates back to the time of the Vikings. There are also fascinating exhibits on the history and landscape of the island, and the lives of the islanders in the past and in modern times.

Puppet and Toy Museum
The "monkey house" in the grounds of Putbus Palace is home to nearly 400 puppets, 35 dolls' houses, countless teddy bears and other toys from the past two centuries. You can also make your own puppets from the porcelain head right down to the lacy underwear.
