Lutherstadt Eisleben, in the eastern foothills of the Harz, is one of the oldest towns between the Harz Mountains and the Elbe. Copper mining- 800 year-old tradition in the Mansfelder Land region- was the determining factor in the town`s economic development, spreading its fame far beyond local boundaries. Martin Luther was born and died here. In order to preserve the memory of the great Reformer, Eisleben was given the epithet “Lutherstadt” in 1946. The Luther memorial sites were declared UNESCO sites of World Heritage in 1997.
