The first garden gnome was made in a Thuringian terracotta factory in 1872. Since then, these “typically German” little men with their pointy hats have evolved into the figures we know today. The tradition was revived in the 1960s, since when the gnomes have been marching from garden to garden like a bulwark against the tides of time, and have spread via central and northern Europe as far as merica and Australia. They have admirers in all four corners of the world.
