The Roman Catholic Church was at the heart of Martin Luther's attack in 1517 when he wrote the "95 Theses", thus sparking off the German Reformation and a new era in the religious and political history of the Western world.
Today the museum of reformation, where Luther lived, contains an excellent collection of his works, manuscripts and illustrations.
The building itself and its museum is officially listed as a UNESCO protected site.
